What is the Third Coast:

The Third Coast is the collective coast line of all five Great Lakes. Eight different states and Ontario Canada border Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, and Lake Superior.  Combined, the Third Coast has 4530 miles of shoreline, which is longer than the United States East Coast and West Coast combined.

The Great Lakes create an environmental climate not like any other in the world. Accounting for 20% of the earth’s surface freshwater, the Great Lakes create an abundance of nature for swimming, surfing, boating, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities.

The eight states (Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois), along with the Canadian province of Ontario, work together to protect the Great Lakes Water reserve and maintain it for future generations.

Each of the states and Canada signed the “Great Lakes Compact” which bans the diversion of water from the Great Lakes to any area outside of the Great Lakes Basin and requires each state to properly manage their water usage.  The Compact was signed by George W. Bush in 2008, and continues to be supported by all that entered into the agreement.

We are all fortunate to have this amazing fresh-water resource and all of the beautiful nature that comes along with it in the region.  So we enjoy it, we spend time out in it, and we work to protect the Third Coast. The Third Coast Brand is a salute to the activities and wonder the region provides, along with a promise of support and protection.
